Wheatear with Bamboo by Ohara Koson introduces a poised songbird set amid slender bamboo, a serene moment distilled through the refined lens of Japan’s shin-hanga revival of traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock printing. Active across the late Meiji, Taishō, and early Shōwa eras, Koson became celebrated for elegant kachō-ga—bird-and-flower compositions that treat nature as a complete subject, rich with seasonality and feeling. Here, the tall, vertical composition and the rhythm of bamboo culms frame the wheatear in a hush of stillness, allowing line, silhouette, and negative space to speak as eloquently as color.

This listing offers a meticulously reproduced fine art print of Koson’s woodblock design, available on acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. The Unique Maps Co. provides a range of sizes from intimate to statement-scale, with optional framing and mounting. Personalization and customization are available—tailored captions, sizing adjustments, or coordinated sets—so you can create a display that harmonizes with your space.

Ohara Koson (1877–1945), also known as Shōson, stands among the foremost figures of shin-hanga, a movement that revitalized the collaborative craft of carving, printing, and publishing in the early 20th century. Widely admired for his sensitive observation of birds, Koson combined traditional sensibilities with a modern eye for tonal nuance, using bokashi gradations and delicate outlines to evoke atmosphere and motion. His prints captured moments that feel both intimate and universal—quiet vignettes where a single creature becomes the lens for nature’s broader rhythms.

The subject of a wheatear perched among bamboo carries layered resonance within Japan’s birds-and-flowers tradition. Bamboo, a motif of resilience and grace, encloses the bird in an elegantly spare stage that points to seasonal change and the fleeting qualities of life—key themes in Ukiyo-e. The wheatear itself, known among ornithologists as part of the genus Oenanthe, is rendered with an alert posture and keen eye, an emblem of transience and migration that aligns with shin-hanga’s reflective mood and early 20th-century interest in the natural world.

Color and composition are masterfully restrained. A palette of soft yellow, green, and beige flows across the print: muted, earthy greens articulate the leaves; warm, pale grounds create breathing room; and the bird’s plumage is described with subtle browns and quiet highlights that suggest texture without crowding the image. The tall, narrow format and careful intervals of empty space heighten the sense of balance and calm. This is a piece that rewards close looking—the feathering’s fine strokes, the gentle sway implied in the bamboo, and the seamless blending of outline with translucent color washes. It brings a contemplative, nature-forward elegance to interiors from minimalist and Japandi to classic and traditional.

A thoughtful gift for nature lovers, birders, and admirers of Japanese art, this print suits birthdays, housewarmings, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Christmas. It’s also a beautiful choice for someone newly returned from Japan or anyone building a serene, seasonally attuned gallery wall.

You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
