Two Cranes I by Ohara Koson introduces a moment of poised stillness: two elegant cranes step through wind-stirred reeds, their long necks and slender legs described with exquisite restraint. Created in 1925 at the height of Japan’s shin-hanga revival, the print reflects Koson’s mastery of kachō-ga (bird-and-flower) subjects—where traditional woodblock craft meets a modern sensitivity to light, space, and natural observation. The minimal setting invites attention to the birds’ quiet grace and the lyrical rhythm of the surrounding grasses.

This listing offers a museum-quality fine art reproduction, available on acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Each print is produced with richly pigmented inks for lasting color and detail. Choose from a range of sizes to fit your space, with optional professional framing. The Unique Maps Co. also provides personalized touches—such as a custom title or dedication on the margin—and can tailor dimensions and framing finishes to suit your décor.

Ohara Koson (1877–1945) is celebrated as a leading figure of the shin-hanga movement, which revived classic ukiyo-e techniques in the early 20th century. His specialization in birds and flowers earned him an international reputation for refinement and sensitivity. In works like Two Cranes I, Koson balances a discerning realism with the gentle poetry of suggestion, capturing posture, gesture, and atmosphere with a few perfectly judged lines and tonal shifts.

Cranes occupy a cherished place in Japanese visual culture, long associated with longevity, fidelity, and good fortune. In this composition, the paired birds echo one another in quietly complementary stances, their measured steps and attentive gaze suggesting a bond without overt narrative. The reeds form a vertical counterpoint to the cranes’ curved necks, animating the scene with a sense of breeze and life while preserving a serene, contemplative mood.

The palette here is especially inviting: a soft, straw-yellow ground suffuses the print with warmth; muted greens of the reeds lend freshness and depth; and the cranes’ plumage reads as a sophisticated harmony of warm beige and subtle ink accents. Koson’s delicate keyblock lines and gentle color gradients (bokashi) further the impression of air and distance, yielding a composition that feels calm, luminous, and impeccably balanced. It’s a versatile piece that sits beautifully in minimalist, Japandi, and modern-classic interiors, offering a moment of quiet to anchor a living room, study, or bedroom.

A thoughtful and symbolic gift, this fine art print makes a meaningful present for weddings and anniversaries (where the cranes’ connotations of fidelity resonate), as well as Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, housewarmings, or for anyone who cherishes Japanese art, nature-inspired design, and timeless elegance.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
