Three Gulls by Ohara Koson is a luminous Japanese woodblock print first published in 1900 at the dawn of the shin-hanga revival. Koson—renowned for his lyrical bird-and-flower subjects—places three gulls in effortless flight over stylized swells, evoking the quiet drama of wind and water. Rooted in the ukiyo-e tradition yet sensitively updated for modern tastes, the composition privileges atmosphere over narrative, inviting the viewer into a moment of transience and calm.

This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print of Three Gulls, produced by The Unique Maps Co. on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Available in a range of sizes, with optional framing and mounts, each piece is color-calibrated for faithful tonality and finished to order. Personalization and customization are welcome—from tailored dimensions to captioning and borders—so you can create the perfect statement for your space.

Ohara Koson (also known as Shoson) was a leading figure of the early 20th-century shin-hanga movement, which reinvigorated traditional Japanese printmaking for a global audience. Best known for his refined kachō-ga (birds-and-flowers), Koson combined classical drawing with a modern, naturalistic sensitivity that captivated both Japanese and Western collectors. His prints balance precision with poetry, rendering wildlife with a serenity that feels timeless.

Three Gulls embodies the ukiyo-e spirit of fleeting beauty while reflecting shin-hanga’s subtle realism. The trio’s placement suggests a gust of maritime air and an expansive horizon, transforming a simple coastal sighting into a meditation on freedom and impermanence. The waves are elegantly abstracted, lending the scene a graphic clarity that heightens its contemplative mood, while the birds’ poised wings introduce rhythm and movement.

Color and craft are central to the print’s allure. A hushed palette of soft blues, grayed tones, and warm beige sets a tranquil stage for the crisp white of the gulls. Delicate linework and nuanced bokashi (gradual ink shading) carry the eye from the darker energy of the foreground waves to the light-filled upper sky, creating depth without clutter. The restrained geometry and expansive negative space make this an exceptionally versatile piece—perfect for coastal, minimalist, or Japandi-inspired interiors seeking calm, air, and light.

A thoughtful gift with broad appeal, Three Gulls is ideal for birthdays, Christmas, Father’s or Mother’s Day, weddings, or a housewarming—especially for beach lovers, sailors, and anyone recently returned from a seaside journey or a trip to Japan.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
