Sandpipers at Sickle Moon by Ohara Koson, 1900
Sandpipers at Sickle Moon by Ohara Koson invites you into a quiet shoreline at nightfall, where a slim crescent glows above a small flock of wading birds. Created around 1900 by the celebrated shin-hanga artist, this Japanese woodblock print distills the essence of a fleeting moment: sandpipers pause between wavelets and wet sand, their delicate forms set against a luminous sky. Koson—renowned for bird-and-flower (kacho-e) imagery—melds close observation with poetic restraint, giving the scene a hush that feels both intimate and timeless.
This listing is for a high-quality fine art reproduction of Koson’s woodblock print, crafted by The Unique Maps Co. Choose museum-grade, acid-free archival paper for crisp detail and a soft matte finish, or select artist’s cotton canvas for a subtly textured, gallery-ready presence. Available in a range of standard and custom sizes, your piece can arrive unframed or professionally framed to suit your space. We also offer thoughtful personalization—custom sizing, margin notes, title plates, or dedication text—so your print is perfectly tailored to your home or recipient.
Ohara Koson (also known as Shoson/Hoson, 1877–1945) was a leading figure of the early 20th-century shin-hanga movement, which revitalized the ukiyo-e tradition through refined drawing, atmospheric color, and modern sensibility. His specialty—birds set within seasonal landscapes—earned him international acclaim for the way he balanced expressive simplicity with naturalistic detail. This print is a quintessential example of his artistry: attentive to the character of each bird, yet composed with striking economy.
The subject resonates with cultural and natural symbolism. Sandpipers—small shorebirds of the Scolopacidae family—appear here as quiet companions to the sea’s edge, standing beneath a “sickle” moon that signals transience and cyclical time. While ukiyo-e blossomed in earlier centuries, Koson’s shin-hanga approach updates that lineage with subtle modeling and mood, offering a moment of calm that feels freshly modern. The result is a contemplative nocturne that rewards repeated viewing.
Color and design are handled with trademark finesse. A restrained palette of moonlit yellow, sea-glass green, and warm beige is tempered by muted blue-grey gradients in the sky and surf, using soft tonal transitions (bokashi) to suggest depth and evening air. The gentle arcs of the waves counterbalance the rounded forms of the birds, while areas of elegant negative space allow the eye to rest. It’s a serene composition that works beautifully at large sizes—glowing from across the room—yet reveals fine feather markings and delicate linework up close. A superb choice for interiors leaning Japandi, coastal, minimalist, or nature-inspired.
A thoughtful and enduring gift, this print suits many occasions: Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, a housewarming by the coast, or a present for birdwatchers, art lovers, and anyone enchanted by Japan’s lyrical seasonal imagery.
