Myna on Magnolia Branch by Ohara Koson is a serene vision from the early 20th century, where the revered kachō-ga (bird-and-flower) tradition meets the poised sensibility of the emerging shin-hanga movement. Koson—active from the late Meiji into the Taishō era—transforms a quiet, everyday sight into an elegant meditation on balance and seasonal beauty: a solitary myna poised on a magnolia bough, blossoms unfurling against a softly luminous ground. Rooted in the Ukiyo-e lineage yet refined by modern naturalism, this composition celebrates ephemeral life with clarity and grace.

This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print of Koson’s woodblock design, produced with archival pigment inks on your choice of acid-free, heavyweight fine art paper or artist’s cotton canvas. The Unique Maps Co. provides a full range of sizes, from intimate studies to statement pieces, along with custom framing and matting options. Personalization is available—add a discreet caption, adjust borders, or tailor the dimensions to fit a specific wall. Each print is carefully color-checked to honor the subtle tonalities and crisp linework that define the original.

Ohara Koson (also known as Shōson) is celebrated for his lyrical depictions of birds among seasonal branches—a genre he elevated through precise drawing and hushed atmosphere. Working at the nexus of tradition and renewal, he helped carry the bird-and-flower subject into the 20th century with a naturalism that felt both timeless and fresh. Collectors admire his work for its meticulous observation, quiet drama, and the mastery with which he renders feathers, petals, and air itself.

This particular scene embodies the refined poetry of kachō-ga. The magnolia—cherished for its noble, ivory blossoms—signals the turning of the seasons, while the myna introduces a lively counterpoint: watchful, intelligent, and alert to the world beyond the frame. The intimate scale and pared-back setting reflect a shift from grand narratives to contemplative moments in nature, a quality that resonated with audiences in Japan and abroad as Ukiyo-e aesthetics influenced Western collectors and, in turn, modern design sensibilities.

The palette is exquisitely restrained: a honeyed yellow and beige background that floats behind crisp, white magnolia petals and cool, leafed greens. The myna’s sleek, dark plumage is articulated with fine, decisive lines, setting up a satisfying contrast with the rounded blooms. Subtle gradations gently model form and atmosphere, while the diagonal sweep of the branch introduces a graceful rhythm. The result is a print that reads as both minimal and abundantly detailed—easy to live with, yet endlessly rewarding up close.

Elegant and timeless, Myna on Magnolia Branch makes a thoughtful gift for lovers of Japanese art, birdwatchers, gardeners, and anyone drawn to calm, nature-centered interiors. It’s perfect for Christmas, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, a housewarming, or as a meaningful memento for someone who has recently traveled to Japan.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
