Moorhens and iris by Ohara Koson (1925) is a serene kachō-e (bird-and-flower) composition from Japan’s shin-hanga movement—a 20th‑century revival of traditional woodblock printing that embraced modern naturalism. Koson, celebrated for his quiet, observational depictions of wildlife, pairs a pair of moorhens with tall, elegant iris stalks to evoke the hush of water’s edge at the turn of the season. A gentle field of beige sets the atmosphere, while soft blue and green tones create a watery calm that lets the subjects breathe.

This listing offers a meticulously produced fine art print from the original woodblock design, available on museum‑quality, acid‑free archival paper or on richly textured artist’s cotton canvas. Choose from a range of sizes and hand‑finished framing options to suit your space. The Unique Maps Co. can personalize your piece with custom sizing, margins, captions, or a gift message—crafted to order and ready to hang.

About the artist: Ohara Koson (also known as Shōson and Hōson) was one of the foremost artists of shin-hanga, renowned for distilling the essence of birds and flowers with lyrical restraint. His prints combine the compositional clarity of earlier ukiyo‑e with refined tonal gradations, resulting in images that feel at once traditional and fresh. Collectors prize Koson for his sensitivity to posture, plumage, and habitat—details that anchor his scenes in observed nature rather than pure ornament.

Why this subject matters: In Japan, birds-and-flowers imagery celebrates the changing seasons and the quiet poetry of everyday nature. Here, moorhens slip between reed and water as iris rise with sculptural grace, conjuring late spring to early summer. The pairing suggests a living ecosystem—water, leaf, blossom, and bird in measured balance—typical of shin‑hanga’s attentive, modern approach to the natural world.

Artistic detail and color: The palette leans into tranquil blues and greens over a warm beige ground, enriched by the deep, inky forms of the birds and a precise note of color at the bill that draws the eye. Slender iris leaves cut crisp verticals through the composition, while the rounded bodies of the moorhens provide a counterpoint of weight and calm. Subtle bokashi (gradation) printing imparts atmosphere—like morning mist on water—giving this print its meditative glow. It’s a versatile piece for interiors: soothing yet distinctive, equally at home in minimal, Japandi, or nature‑forward rooms.

This fine art print makes a thoughtful gift for lovers of Japanese art, gardeners and birdwatchers, and anyone drawn to tranquil, nature‑inspired decor. Perfect for Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays, housewarmings, or as a welcome-home present for someone who has recently travelled to Japan.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
