Monkey with Insect by Ohara Koson introduces a moment of quiet curiosity distilled into a single, graceful encounter: a poised monkey intent on a tiny insect amid swaying grasses. Created in the early 20th century by one of shin-hanga’s most admired designers, the woodblock print balances realism and elegant stylization. Koson (1877–1945) became renowned for his lyrical portrayals of animals and birds, and here he captures a tranquil, almost meditative pause in the natural world—an image that feels both timeless and modern.

This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print of Monkey with Insect, reproduced with care by The Unique Maps Co. Choose acid-free archival paper for a classic print with a soft, velvety surface, or artist’s cotton canvas for a textured, gallery-ready finish. Multiple sizes are available, with optional framing to suit contemporary or traditional interiors. Personalize your piece with custom sizing, margins, or a caption, and let our studio tailor the presentation to your space.

Ohara Koson stands at the heart of the shin-hanga movement, which revitalized traditional ukiyo-e techniques for a new century. Working with master carvers and printers, he refined delicate linework and atmospheric color gradations to express the living character of his subjects. His animal studies—at once observant and poetic—earned wide acclaim in Japan and abroad for their blend of classical sensibility and fresh, modern appeal.

Monkey with Insect is especially notable for how it turns a small, everyday drama into a study of attention and presence. In Japanese art and folklore, monkeys often signify intelligence and playfulness; here, the animal’s watchful stare draws us into a quiet narrative of curiosity and restraint. The composition’s generous negative space deepens that sense of stillness, while the diagonal sweep of grasses hints at a world gently moving around this concentrated gaze.

The palette is beautifully restrained: warm yellow and beige notes glow softly behind the scene, while fine gray tones articulate the monkey’s rounded form and plush fur. The grasses arc in fluid, organic patterns, their thin strokes set against the soft fields of color to evoke both air and motion. With its serene colors and balanced design, this print complements minimalist, Japandi, and nature-inspired interiors, bringing a contemplative focal point to living rooms, studies, or bedrooms.

Thoughtful and refined, this artwork makes a meaningful gift for lovers of Japanese art, nature enthusiasts, or anyone drawn to calm, contemplative imagery. It’s a beautiful choice for Christmas, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, a housewarming, or as a memento for someone who has recently traveled to Japan—or is dreaming of going.

You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
