Ohara Koson’s Kwak on branch (1900) distills the quiet poetry of the Japanese kachō-e tradition into a single, striking moment: a solitary crow poised on a bare bough. Active from the late Meiji through the early Shōwa era, Koson became renowned for his exquisitely observed birds and flowers, uniting naturalistic detail with lyrical restraint. Here, the bird’s inky silhouette commands the composition, its presence intensified by a soft, luminous ground and the spare calligraphy of the branch—an elegant balance of stillness and movement that feels both timeless and modern.

This fine art edition is produced by The Unique Maps Co. as a museum-quality print on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Available in a range of sizes to suit intimate corners or statement walls, it can be ordered unframed or professionally framed. Personalization options include custom sizing and an optional printed caption, with further customization available upon request.

About the artist: Ohara Koson (also known as Shōson) is celebrated for revitalizing bird-and-flower subjects within the shin-hanga movement, building on Ukiyo-e foundations with nuanced color, sensitive linework, and atmospheric gradations. His prints are prized for their quiet drama—each feather and branch rendered with disciplined precision, yet never at the expense of mood.

About the artwork: The composition’s focus on a lone crow heightens its contemplative tone, a hallmark of Japanese aesthetics that cherish suggestion over spectacle. The stark branch, likely winter-bare, and the bird’s concentrated gaze create a narrative of alertness and calm. The emptiness around them—negative space—becomes an active element, inviting the eye to linger and the mind to complete the scene.

Color, style, and why to own it: A restrained palette of warm yellow, mossy green, and silvery gray underpins the print’s serene atmosphere. Subtle tonal shifts—akin to bokashi gradations—wash the background with gentle light, while the crow’s charcoal plumage feels velvety and sculptural against the softer field. The clean contours and delicate textures make this piece a versatile accent for interiors ranging from Japandi minimalism to classic eclectic, and a beautiful way to bring nature’s quiet presence indoors.

Thoughtful and refined, this print makes a meaningful gift for art lovers and bird enthusiasts alike—perfect for Christmas, Mother’s or Father’s Day, a housewarming, or for anyone with a deep appreciation of Japanese art or a recent journey to Japan.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
