Great tit on branch with pink flowers by Ohara Koson is a serene early 20th‑century woodblock print that distills the quiet poetry of nature into an elegant, contemplative scene. Known for his mastery of kachō‑e (bird‑and‑flower images), Koson places a small songbird delicately among pale blossoms, balancing close observation with decorative harmony. The restrained palette, softly layered color, and flowing lines evoke the seasonal sensibility so prized in Japanese printmaking, where the fleeting beauty of a single moment becomes timeless on paper.

Offered by The Unique Maps Co. as a museum‑quality fine art print, this piece is available on acid‑free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas using long‑lasting, pigment‑rich inks. Choose from a range of sizes, with optional professional framing and matting to fit your space. We also offer personalization—add a title caption, date, or short dedication—and can tailor margins, borders, and sizing upon request to create a print that feels uniquely yours.

Ohara Koson (1877–1945) was among the foremost artists of the shin‑hanga era, celebrated for refining traditional ukiyo‑e techniques to suit modern tastes. His kachō‑e compositions are admired for their lyrical understatement: carefully drawn plumage, softly modulated backgrounds, and impeccable registration that invites close, unhurried looking. Koson’s legacy lies in elevating everyday encounters with wildlife into emblematic images of grace and calm.

In this artwork, the great tit—a familiar garden bird—perches with alert poise amid pink blossoms and fresh foliage, a vignette that speaks to renewal and the passage of seasons. The subject mirrors a broader cultural appreciation for nature’s transience: a quiet pause within life’s ebb and flow. Created around 1900, it bridges older ukiyo‑e traditions with early 20th‑century innovations in color layering and subtle tonal gradation, bringing depth and atmosphere to a simple branch.

Color is central to its appeal. The bird’s yellow breast is set against gentle greens and a warm beige ground, allowing the vibrant pinks of the blooms to breathe without overwhelming the scene. Fine keylines describe the contours of leaves and feathers; soft, almost misted transitions add dimension without heaviness. The asymmetrical composition and generous negative space feel impeccably modern, making this print at home in minimalist, Japandi, or classic interiors alike. For collectors who appreciate natural history, the subject is the great tit (Parus major), rendered with clarity and care.

A thoughtful gift for bird lovers, gardeners, and admirers of Japanese art, this print suits birthdays, Mother’s or Father’s Day, housewarmings, Christmas, or as a memento for someone returning from travels in Japan. Its calm palette and quiet elegance make it a versatile, meaningful addition to any room.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge.
