Goose (1900–1930) by Ohara Koson introduces a tranquil moment from nature distilled through the refined sensibility of Japan’s Shin-hanga movement. Koson (1877–1945), renowned for his kachō-e—bird-and-flower subjects—captures a lone goose in poised motion against a quietly shifting sky. The work blends close observation with lyrical restraint, evoking seasonal atmosphere and the contemplative beauty at the heart of Japanese printmaking.

This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print of Koson’s woodblock design, produced on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Available in a range of sizes, it can be ordered unframed or expertly framed, with optional archival mats and UV-protective glazing. The Unique Maps Co. also provides personalization—custom sizing, titleplates, inscriptions, and color-matched borders—so your piece arrives ready to hang and harmonize with your space.

About the artist: Ohara Koson was a leading figure of the early 20th-century Shin-hanga revival, which refreshed classical ukiyo-e methods for modern audiences. Best known for elegant portrayals of birds and flowers, he combined painterly sensitivity with the collaborative craftsmanship of woodblock carving and printing, creating images prized by collectors in Japan and abroad. His prints convey quiet drama: a turning wing, a pause on a reed, a breath of wind across water.

Why this subject matters: The goose has long been a poetic emblem in Japanese art, often associated with autumn, fidelity, and the turning of seasons. Dated broadly to 1900–1930, this design reflects Koson’s commitment to naturalism and atmosphere—a bridge between the heritage of Edo-period print aesthetics and the refined tastes of the modern era. It’s a timeless scene that suggests migration and return, solitude and companionship, all in a single, serene gesture.

Color, style, and design: A soft wash of yellow and beige plays across the sky, transitioning through gentle greys that recede into depth—a masterful use of bokashi gradation. The goose’s plumage is described with crisp, delicate linework, while the surrounding reeds are simplified to flowing, calligraphic forms. The composition’s negative space, muted palette, and sweeping curves lend the piece exceptional calm and versatility, making it an elegant focal point for interiors ranging from minimalist to traditional.

A thoughtful and memorable gift, this fine art print suits occasions from Christmas and Mother’s or Father’s Day to housewarmings and anniversaries. It’s especially meaningful for lovers of Japanese art, birdwatchers, and anyone who cherishes serene, nature-inspired design—or for a friend returning from travels to Japan who wants to keep that sense of quiet beauty close at hand.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
