Five Chicks (1900) by Ohara Koson introduces a tender moment from nature with the quiet grace that defines Japan’s early 20th‑century print revival. A master of kachō‑e—bird‑and‑flower imagery—Koson renders five newly hatched chicks huddled together, their downy forms set against a softly graded ground. Working at the crossroads of late Meiji and Taishō aesthetics, he translates the timeless ukiyo‑e sensitivity to season and atmosphere into a refined, modern register.

This fine art print is meticulously reproduced by The Unique Maps Co. on your choice of acid‑free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas for long‑lasting color and detail. Available in a range of sizes from intimate to statement‑scale, it can be ordered unframed or expertly framed—ready to hang—with optional matting. Personalization options include custom sizing, border additions, and a printed title or dedication, ensuring a piece tailored to your space or occasion.

Ohara Koson (1877–1945), also known as Shōson, stands among the most beloved artists of Japan’s shin‑hanga movement, admired for his serene wildlife studies and superb craft. His prints balance naturalistic observation with poetic restraint, earning an international following for their delicacy of line and nuanced color. In Five Chicks, he distills gesture and texture into a lyrical scene that celebrates life at its most vulnerable and endearing.

The subject is simple yet culturally resonant: a springtime vignette that reflects Japan’s enduring reverence for nature’s cycles. Koson’s arrangement gathers the chicks into a compact cluster, suggesting warmth, safety, and the gentle bustle of new life. This intimate focus, typical of kachō‑e, made such works highly collectible in the early 1900s and emblematic of the renewed global fascination with Japanese woodblock printing.

Color and craft are the quiet stars here. A buff‑beige ground fades through subtle gray with the soft bokashi gradation that Koson used to create atmosphere, while the chicks’ pale yellow down and graphite‑toned beaks and legs supply restrained, graceful contrast. Fine, deliberate strokes articulate wisps of fluff and delicate claws; hints of soft green suggest grass, anchoring the group without distracting from their rounded, fluffy silhouettes. For those who appreciate natural history, the subject is the domestic chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), rendered with attentive realism yet a painterly lightness that suits contemporary interiors as easily as traditional ones.

Thoughtful and calming, Five Chicks makes a charming gift for bird lovers, new parents, and admirers of Japanese art alike—perfect for Christmas, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, a housewarming, or as a keepsake for someone returning from travels to Japan.

If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.

You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
