Cuckoo in Storm by Ohara Koson (1925) is a luminous example of early 20th‑century Japanese woodblock printmaking at its most poetic. A leading figure of the shin-hanga revival, Koson transforms a fleeting glimpse of nature into an elegant meditation on weather, movement, and silence. A lone cuckoo crosses a storm-darkened sky, its streamlined silhouette set against sweeping atmosphere and carefully placed negative space—an heir to Ukiyo-e aesthetics refined for modern eyes.

This listing offers a meticulous fine art print of Koson’s woodblock original, produced with museum-grade pigments on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Multiple sizes are available, along with custom framing and matting options tailored by The Unique Maps Co. Add a personalized caption, dedication, or date, and select border and cropping preferences to suit your space and style.

Ohara Koson (also known as Shōson) was celebrated for kachō-ga—bird-and-flower subjects rendered with extraordinary sensitivity. Working in the 1920s–30s, he helped bridge traditional Ukiyo-e carving with fresh printing techniques, achieving subtle gradients (bokashi) and lifelike textures that made his avian portraits internationally admired.

This composition captures the emotional charge of a summer squall. In Japanese art and poetry, the cuckoo often embodies longing and the season’s passing; here, the bird’s purposeful flight through wind and rain evokes both delicacy and tension. The spare staging—sky, foliage, and a single bird—distills the scene to its essence, inviting quiet contemplation.

Color and design are masterfully restrained. A stormy gray atmosphere is tempered by yellow and green tones that read as light breaking through weather, while the cuckoo’s finely carved plumage contrasts crisply against soft, layered gradients. The diagonal sweep of the rain and the measured use of empty space heighten a sense of movement and calm—qualities that make this print a natural fit for minimalist, Japandi, and wabi-sabi interiors.

Beautifully produced and easy to style, this print makes a refined gift for bird lovers, admirers of Japanese art, and design enthusiasts alike. It’s perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, housewarmings, Christmas, Mother’s or Father’s Day—or for anyone recently returned from Japan and eager to bring home a piece of its serene visual poetry.

If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.

You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
