Crows at Full Moon by Ohara Koson, 1925
Ohara Koson’s Crows at Full Moon (1925) is a quietly dramatic woodblock print from Japan’s shin-hanga era, where traditional ukiyo-e techniques were revitalized with a modern eye for mood and atmosphere. In this nocturne, Koson distills the scene to essentials: the inky silhouettes of crows set against a luminous, round moon and a sky that shades from pale dusk to deep night. The result is spare, poetic, and just a touch mysterious—an elegant balance of nature study and design.
This listing offers a museum-quality fine art reproduction, available on acid-free archival paper or on artist’s cotton canvas. Sizes range from intimate to statement-making, with optional professional framing. The Unique Maps Co. can personalize your print with custom sizing, tasteful margins, captions, or dedication notes, and we’re happy to help you select a frame and finish that suit your space.
Ohara Koson (also known as Hoson and Shoson) was a leading figure of early 20th‑century shin-hanga, celebrated for kachō‑e—bird-and-flower subjects rendered with exquisite clarity and restraint. His work bridged traditional carving and printing methods with a contemporary sensitivity to light and mood, making him a favorite among collectors in Japan and abroad. Koson’s prints are prized for their serene compositions, exacting draftsmanship, and the way they distill natural forms into enduring, lyrical icons.
Crows at Full Moon is one of his most evocative nocturnes. In Japanese visual culture, crows often carry associations of intelligence, change, and mystery. Here, they activate the quiet sky, their forms hovering between presence and silhouette, while the full moon anchors the composition with a calm, celestial stillness. The print’s emptier passages—an embrace of ma, or meaningful negative space—heighten the tension between motion and silence, nature and design.
The palette is a harmony of deep indigo and midnight blue set against the pale, beige-white moon. A subtle bokashi gradient softens the heavens from light to dark, creating atmospheric depth. Crisp key lines define the birds, while the moon’s cool glow and the restrained use of color lend the scene a meditative quality. Displayed in a living room, hallway, or bedroom, this print introduces a restful, contemporary minimalism that pairs beautifully with natural woods, charcoal textiles, and soft neutrals—an elegant statement for modern interiors.
Thoughtful and timeless, Crows at Full Moon makes an exceptional gift—perfect for lovers of Japanese art and design, bird enthusiasts, or anyone drawn to nightscapes and contemplative imagery. It’s ideal for Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s or Father’s Day, housewarmings, or as a meaningful keepsake for someone who has recently traveled to Japan.
