Common And Golden Carp (1935) by Ohara Koson is a serene celebration of nature from one of Japan’s masters of kachō-e—images of birds, flowers, and the living world. Created during the early Shōwa era, this woodblock print reflects the 20th‑century shin-hanga revival, in which artists renewed classic ukiyo-e subjects with crisp design, luminous color, and breathtaking attention to texture and movement. Here, Koson turns to the water’s surface: two carp slip beneath broad lily pads, their bodies tapering into elegant arcs as ripples soften into mist.

This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print of Koson’s composition, produced on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. The Unique Maps Co. provides a full range of sizes to suit intimate spaces or statement walls, with optional custom framing in gallery-grade finishes. Personalization is available—add borders, captions, or special sizing to fit your interior scheme precisely.

Ohara Koson (1877–1945) is celebrated for his refined depictions of the natural world, bridging traditional craft and modern sensibility. His prints are prized for their quiet mood and immaculate printing—qualities that made him a leading figure in the shin-hanga movement. Koson’s command of line and gradient lends his animals and landscapes a tranquil poise; even at rest, they seem to breathe.

The subject here is rich with cultural resonance. In Japanese art, carp symbolize perseverance, strength, and good fortune—creatures admired for swimming upstream against the current. The darker fish suggests the robust common carp, while the luminous companion gleams with golden vitality, a visual metaphor for balance and harmony. For collectors of Japanese prints and lovers of aquatic themes, this composition offers both beauty and meaning.

Koson’s color is meditative: sea-glass greens tint the water and lily pads; the golden-orange fish glows with pearly highlights; and soft whites brighten the fins and the light that halos their movement. Delicate scale patterns, subtle bokashi (graded color), and smooth, flowing strokes create a sense of depth and motion without disturbing the print’s calm. The contrast between the warm, coppery fish and the cool, jade-green setting is especially compelling on a wall. For those who enjoy natural history detail, the common carp, Cyprinus carpio, is artfully observed here—its broad back, whiskered mouth, and gently arched profile rendered with sensitive precision.

A timeless choice for serene bedrooms, contemplative studies, or spa-like living areas, this fine art print also makes a thoughtful gift—perfect for birthdays, housewarmings, weddings, Mother’s or Father’s Day, or for anyone who cherishes Japanese art, koi ponds, or the symbolism of resilience and good luck.

If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.

You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

This artwork is taller than most, which would make it a perfect statement piece in a panelled room, on a gallery wall, or perhaps alongside another tall piece of art or furniture.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
