American Snipe by John James Audubon, 1827
"American Snipe (Plate 243)" was first published in 1827 and is part of John James Audubon's monumental work, Birds of America. This exquisite illustration captures the essence of the American Snipe, a bird whose breeding habits and migratory patterns Audubon meticulously documented.
This offering includes an exceptionally high-quality fine art print, restored and prepared by The Unique Maps Co. Your personalized art will be handcrafted in our workshop and printed on gorgeously thick archival matte paper that won't fade or wrinkle for decades to come.
John James Audubon was a pioneering ornithologist and artist whose work remains influential. Notably, his Birds of America is a collection of 435 hand-colored prints, each depicting North American bird species in life-size dimensions. This allowed for unparalleled detail, not just of the birds themselves but also of their natural habitats.
The illustration of the American Snipe is particularly remarkable. Audubon captured not only the bird's physical characteristics but also its behaviors and environmental context. The color palette and fine detailing make this piece a true work of art that appeals to both nature enthusiasts and art collectors alike.
By owning this print, you are bringing into your home a piece of history and a celebration of avian beauty. It makes an impeccable gift for Christmas, Father's Day, Mother's Day, a housewarming, or even a work-leaving present, perfect for those who have an appreciation for fine art and natural history.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
